Note: The FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT step to resolving intra-household conflict is to IMPLEMENT MANAGEMENT and PREVENT RECURRENCES.
DO NOT WAIT to implement a management program, as most of these behaviours will escalate with every occurrence.
Immediate Management Techniques to Consider
- Leashing one or both animals at all times
- 'Crate and Rotate' system that prevents interaction
- Restriction of animal(s) to specific rooms or areas of the home
Dogs are co-operative social mammals, and it is not normal to have conflict between housemates. Whether the challenge is dog-dog, dog-cat, or dog-kid, if you find yourself changing your daily routines to prevent conflict, I want to help.
Dog-Dog: We'll determine the source of conflict, develop a plan to prevent recurrences, and re-develop trust and a positive relationship through carefully managed positive reinforcement exercises!
Dog-Cat: We'll set your dog up for success by creating an enrichment plan that meets their need to engage in 'hunting' behaviours, as well as developing the impulse control and understanding to treat your cat like a pack member instead of a plaything!
Dog-Kid: Relationships between children and dogs can be hard! Kids lack impulse control, and their expectations of dogs are largely shaped by fiction. I offer age-appropriate coaching and activities to help your child learn to understand, appreciate, and love their canine friend the way that dogs enjoy being loved!
