Once puppies who are old enough to safely take field trips, my ‘Play & Learn’ Outings are a great option to SOCIALIZE and GENERALIZE!

For our dogs, distraction increases difficulty! That means that in novel situations, when our dogs are trying to assess whether all the New Things are threats, it becomes much harder for them to remember learned behaviors and training.

Generalization and socialization are the answers!

Socialization is often reduced to simply exposing a puppy to the world, but for socialization to produce a confident dog, two factors must be present. The puppy must feel (not just be) safe, and the puppy must feel a sense of agency—that they can take as much time as they need to explore. That means a lot of time to slow down and watch, and a lot of awareness of what puppy feels from moment to moment! Not what most of us pictured when bringing home Puppy.

Generalization is the process of proofing, or practicing, learned behaviors in all of the environments and under all of the conditions that we anticipate the dog tolerating.

Socializing and generalizing can include, but aren’t limited to, multiple pokey and puppy-centered trips to the park, the vet, the school pickup, the farmer’s market, the downtown…who has the time?!
